I saw them on BART, during rush hour. They were a middleaged couple in the commuter crowd. I was looking at them from the back, I could only see half of his face turned towards her. He was looking at her and his fingers were gently touching her hair and face. They did not need words, they were just looking at each other. They clearly were in their own world, these two people. I could not see her face, but I could tell that she was fully absorbed in the dialog. Then she got up and headed for the exit, he stayed. At that point, I saw her face. Objectively, there was nothing special or even attractive about this woman, but I saw her through the eyes of her man. In his view, she was beautiful..... There was that thread connecting two of them, invisible to the crowd, still connecting as the escalator was taking her up to the street.... One of the books that left deep imprint on me is To Have And Have Not... The scene where the main hero talks about his wife and then the narrator describes her.... It stuck in my head forever. Harry Morgan was blind in his love for his wife, in his view the old and fat woman was as beautiful as she was on the first day they met. I wish all of us on Chirrup to find that kind of love. The one that makes us beautiful even if we are fat and wrinkled, strong even if we sometimes waiver, smart even when we say or do something foolish. Only because there is something who sees more in us than what we are. Because then we will be.....
